The Egalitarian and ARTE Unite: Leading the Fight Against Spiking

At The Egalitarian, we’re passionate about creating safer environments through our Safe Place Project.

Our mission is to empower pubs, clubs, bars, venues, festivals, universities, and corporate workplaces to become effective allies in the fight against social injustices. Through targeted training, we help these establishments take small yet impactful actions that can make a significant difference. This involves understanding what’s wrong, knowing how to intervene, and preventing harmful situations from escalating.

Our latest endeavour involved collaborating with ARTE, the European Culture channel, to produce a powerful documentary focused on spiking prevention. This documentary shines a spotlight on the need for proactive measures in venues that operate within the nighttime economy. We emphasised the importance of a multifaceted approach to spiking prevention, highlighting that while proposed legal changes to make spiking a standalone criminal offence are crucial, they must be complemented by other strategies.

We filmed at our lovely client Supper Club Wakefield’s venue, who we trained using the funding from the West Yorkshire Mayor’s Safer Communities Fund. Two of the management team got involved in the filming, where we discussed the contents of our training and how this has benefitted their staff. We spoke about real life scenarios during their role whereby they have applied our techniques of identification, prevention and victim-focussed response approaches.
