To kick off 2025, we delivered a hybrid training session on understanding unconscious bias and tackling it in the workplace to the staff of Northern Monk, a popular brewery and venue chain known for its commitment to quality, craft beer, and creating a vibrant community atmosphere.
Both virtually and in-person, we provided staff with a deeper understanding of how unconscious bias can impact workplace dynamics and offer tools and techniques for creating a more inclusive, respectful, and empowering environment.
It was the first time we had delivered a hybrid session whereby we had participants attend the session virtually whilst we also had staff with us in person and it was great to see how everyone was engaged and included throughout.
We explored the concept that a truly inclusive workplace is one where everyone feels empowered, is treated equally, has respect and is diverse. Participants also reflected on the challenges that can arise in achieving this, such as unconscious biases influencing hiring, team dynamics, or interpersonal interactions. We acknowledged that while the aim is always to create an inclusive space, there are sometimes unseen factors that can unintentionally undermine respect and inclusivity.
The main focusof the session was understanding unconscious bias—how it works, where it comes from, and how it shapes our behaviour. It was important to make it clear that unconscious bias is not inherently "bad”. Rather, it’s a natural part of who we are and stems from our upbringing, experiences, and personal preferences. These biases, however, can affect our decisions and interactions without us even realising it.
We focused on two types of bias that are especially relevant in a workplace setting: affinity bias and confirmation bias.
Understanding these biases allowed participants to reflect on their own behaviour and consider how they might unknowingly favour certain colleagues or limit opportunities for others.
With a deeper understanding of unconscious bias in hand, we moved on to discussing actionable strategies for challenging and mitigating its impact in the workplace. We emphasised that the key to addressing bias is not necessarily to eliminate it, since biases are ingrained and natural, but rather to become more aware of them and consciously interrupt biased thinking when it arises.
The training session at Northern Monk was not just about recognising unconscious bias but also about empowering the team with the knowledge and tools to actively create a workplace where everyone feels included. As we had established earlier in the session that unconscious bias is a natural part of who we are, we were then able to approach the topic in a non-judgmental way, allowing participants to engage in open and honest discussions.
The conversations that arose from the training were insightful, and the staff left with a greater sense of responsibility to be conscious of their biases and to take deliberate actions in promoting a more inclusive and respectful workplace.
