case study
Bucks Students' Union

We recently returned to Bucks Students’ Union to deliver a training session to staff of ‘The Venue’, their Student bar, and re-certify them as a Safe Place! Our interactive workshop primarily looked at identifying, preventing and responding to spiking and sexual violence using community led data and real life scenarios.

Following the success of the previous work we have done with Bucks Students’ Union, we returned back in September 2024 to deliver an important training session to ‘The Venue’ staff to enhance the safety and well-being of the student community. Our bespoke training session focused on equipping bar staff with the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, prevent and respond to incidents of spiking and sexual violence.

After meeting with their management team on multiple occasions to ensure we delivered the session specifically to their needs, we identified that the key objectives of the session will be to train bar staff to recognise signs of potential spiking incidents; develop awareness of the indicators of sexual violence within a social setting; educate staff on proactive strategies to discourage and deter potential perpetrators and foster a supportive and empathetic approach to victims of spiking and sexual violence.

We helped to build knowledge on identifying possible vulnerable groups and perpetrator behaviours associated with spiking, sexual harassment, assault and rape. We also built on staff experiences to ensure we collaborate as a team to prevent perpetrators from acting as well as intervening in situations as effective allies.

One of the key areas of our training was the integration of real-life case studies to illustrate the importance of being vigilant whilst on shift, providing hands-on exercises to simulate potential incidents and practice responses.

‘The training we received was engaging and educating. The uniqueness of it will not be forgotten, I would tell any venue and security managers to take this training with their team’. - Jenaya-Nicole Hackshaw, Manager at The Venue

By providing bar staff with the knowledge and skills to identify, prevent and respond to incidents of spiking and sexual violence, we aim to contribute to a safer and more secure social environment on campus. We look forward to continued partnerships with universities that prioritise the well-being of our communities.
